My Lord:-

I have received from Sir Robert Hart some postal statistics for 1903, which may be interesting to Your Lordship as showing the extension and progress of the Chinese Imperial Post Office under the control of the Inspector General of Maritime Customs.

The Establishment consisted of the Central Office at Peking, 34 Head Offices, 320 Branch Offices, and 609 Agencies.

Postal Articles handled were 20,900,000 outwards and 21,400,000 inwards,

Parcels were forwarded weighing 2,700,000 lbs., and amounting to 487,000 in number.

Expenditure was Tls. 665,000, and collection Tls. 345,000.

The Staff consisted of 80 Europeans and over 4,000 Chinese.

Money orders cashed were 188,781 in number.
